Educational Psychology

What is educational Psychology?

Educational psychology focuses on understanding how people learn and identifying barriers to effective learning. Unlike other psychologists who may address emotional or behavioural issues, educational psychologists specialise in diagnosing learning & cognitive difficulties and providing practical strategies to overcome them. Their work bridges the gap between mental health and education, ensuring that every individual has the tools they need to succeed.

What do BetterCare™ Psychoeducational Assessments include?

Our comprehensive 3 hour in-person assessments are tailored to each individual's unique needs, offering a thorough understanding of their strengths and challenges. These assessments are for children over 8 years old, adolescents and adults. At BetterCare™ we take a more comprehensive, thorough approach by assessing for 3 specific learning disabilities (SLD) as part of every assessment, this is more time and cost efficient for our clients.

Each BetterCare™ assessment investigates the following:

Dyslexia: A learning difficulty that affects reading, writing, and spelling. People with dyslexia may struggle with word recognition, decoding, and processing written language, though it does not affect intelligence.

Assessment:

  • Focus: Identifies difficulties with reading, spelling, and phonological processing.

  • Process: Includes tests for reading fluency, comprehension, and decoding skills, alongside memory and language assessments.

  • Outcome: A detailed report with recommendations for classroom accommodations and tailored learning strategies.

Dysgraphia: A learning difficulty related to handwriting. It can affect the physical act of writing and the ability to organize thoughts on paper, leading to issues with legibility, spelling, and written expression.

Assessment:

  • Focus: Examines handwriting difficulties, including issues with legibility, speed, and writing mechanics.

  • Process: Combines written tasks, fine motor skill evaluations, and visual-motor integration tests.

  • Outcome: Strategies to support written communication, including the use of assistive technologies.

Dyscalculia: A learning difficulty that impacts mathematical skills. It can cause challenges with understanding numbers, performing calculations, learning math concepts, and managing time or money.

Assessment:

  • Focus: Identifies challenges with numerical reasoning, arithmetic, and mathematical problem-solving.

  • Process: Includes evaluations of numerical processing, memory for mathematical concepts, and problem-solving skills.

  • Outcome: Specific interventions and tools to enhance mathematical understanding and confidence.
